We have more great breeds making an appearance this weekend!

New chicks will be hatching tomorrow and available this Saturday at The Country Feed Store!! The breeds available this weekend are Golden Laced Wyandottes, Welsummers, Brown Leghorns, and Ameraucanas. The ducklings available are Pekins, Buffs, Black Swedish, and Khaki Campbells.

Wyandottes are a favorite amongst backyard flock owners for their dependable egg laying, easygoing nature, hardiness, and the great variety of beautiful feather patterns available. Silver Penciled, Golden Laced, Blue, Columbian and White Wyandottes are all rather rare. Wyandottes are generally easygoing with a tendency toward domination. The Golden Laced Wyandotte is a golden color with black around the edge of every feather and black tail. Joseph McKeen of Wisconsin was the originator of the Golden Laced Wyandotte. In 1880 he crossed Silver Laced Wyandotte females with a large “Black Red” patterned fowl of unknown origin called the Winnebago.

The Welsummer is a beautiful breed from Holland famous for its deep reddish brown egg color. Many of the eggs are also speckled. Welsummers are good foragers meaning you’ll save on feed if you allow them to range freely!  They lay about 4 large brown eggs per week.

Brown Leghorns are generally recognized as the most colorful of the Leghorn family and like all Leghorns lay white eggs, are nonsetters, have large combs and white ear lobes, and yellow skin, shanks and feet. The male is very handsome with orange hackle and saddle and black stripes in center of each feather. The female is a medium brown with delicate penciling; wings are a darker brown and breast is salmon colored.

The Ameraucana breed was derived from blue egg laying chickens. In addition, rather than ear tufts, they have muffs and a beard, and are very hardy and sweet. The Ameraucana Chicken is a fairly new breed introduced into the world of chickens and was bred for the unique color of the eggs.  They lay eggs in shades of blue, and even have blue (or “slate”) legs.
